This disease has been attributed to mutations in the Norrie Disease Pseudoglioma (NDP) gene, which is involved in normal retinal vascularization.
In 2008, Nili-Ahmadabadi et al. investigated the association between the presence of advanced ROP and NDP gene mutations in 50 premature Iranian infants, by applying PCR and direct sequencing.
No significant association was observed between the presence of an NDP gene mutation and the advanced stages of ROP (141).
Contrarily, a 2005 American study investigated NDP mutations in a large sample of premature infants and revealed that 11% of patients with advanced ROP had polymorphisms in the NDP gene.
However, this study stated the extent of NDP polymorphism in this population as moderate, and not capable of playing a causative role (142).
